Freie Christliche Schule Freiburg

Freie Christliche Schule Freiburg is located in Freiburg, a university city which functions as a technology and sustainable living hub for the entire region. We have a primary school and two types of secondary schools: Sekundarschule (6 years) and Gymnasium (9 years) plus a vocational branch with students focusing on Design and Media. Students learn English, French and Spanish. The school currently has about 540 students and 50 teachers. We have an extremely heterogeneous body of students from different socioeconomical, cultural, and educational backgrounds.According to the Focus Städteranking However, the district where the school is located has a higher than average number of migrants and higher than average unemployment rate. It is considered one of the two socially disadvantaged areas in the city. The school sees it as its calling to act as center of holistic learning and exchange which is intended to counteract the increasing social stratification. We consider it essential that our students connect with people from other countries to actively live the European spirit and advance in the field of intercultural learning and we believe that the program offers our students the invaluable possibility to train and develop soft skills which they will need in their professional future. Freiburg is one of the "greenest", if not THE green city in Germany. For many years it has been at the vanguard of sustainable city-development, and alternative energies. It is therefore the perfect place to investigate possibilities to counter negative impacts of pollution and climate change. The recent "Fridays for Future" protests have also reached our school so the project will allow us to dig deeper into an issue that is obviously very important to our students. Given their own nvolvement and the opportunity to implement their own ideas on an international level this project should be highly motivating for students and is a chance even for those who are usually less engaged. The project provides real life application for skills and knowledge acquired in school and we see a particular opportunity for those who usually struggle to find meaning in their schoolwork.
